P&O Portsmouth-Bilbao route to end 27th September 2010

P&O Ferries has given notice that is it proposing to withdraw from the Portsmouth-Bilbao route at the end of September 2010, when the charter of the ship it uses for the service, the Pride of Bilbao, comes to an end.

P&O say "The Pride of Bilbao has served us well but is now an old ship nearing the end of her commercial life"

The service will operate as scheduled up to and including the Bilbao-Portsmouth departure on Monday 27th September 2010 and any bookings up to this date will be unaffected.

Any customers with bookings beyond this date will be contacted by P&O.

Lisbon - London high speed rail link by 2013

With news this week that Spain and France have agreed to form a company to build a high-speed rail line linking Madrid and Paris, it has now become a real possibility that commuters could travel between London and Lisbon on a high-speed train by 2013. A few years later, Faro will follow in being linked with the British capital.

Pine Tree Disease Spreading at Alarming Rate

A leading forestry spokesperson has this week warned that the nematode bug, the main killer of pinetrees throughout Portugal, is spreading "at a drastic rate" and has now reached such an extent that controlling the phenomenon is out of the question. He further expects natural grown pines to eventually be ruled extinct.

Lynx Reintroduction Programme

Twenty years after becoming extinct in Portugal, the Iberian lynx is to return to the country next week as part of a reintroduction programme.

A total of 16 are to be transferred to the new breeding centre in the village of Silves in Portugal.

Solar Thermal Incentives from the Portuguese Government

The Portuguese government and the banks have recently launched a new incentive scheme to encourage the installation of solar thermal systems.

The government will make a contribution of 50% (up to a maximum of 1.641,70€) towards the total supply and installation cost.

The banks will provide a loan for the remainder over 7 years (at an interest rate of base rate & 1.5%). There are three systems available. For more details please visit:

First Forest Fire - Castanheira de Pera

The first forest fire of 2009 struck in Serra do Ameal in Castanheira de Pera today. Bombeiros on the ground and helicopters fought to extinguish the fire for more than 24 hours.

Last Imperial Eagle Shot in Portugal

Portugal's only nesting male Iberial Imperial Eagle has been shot in the Vale do Guadiana Natural Park close to the country's south eastern border with Spain.

The Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) is one of the three rarest birds of prey in the world.

Europes Biggest Wind Farm Switches On

Europes biggest onshore wind farm plugged into the national grid today. The 120 windmills are dotted along the mountain ridges in the Upper Minho region of north Portugal.

Each windmill has a 2 megawatt turbine and jointly they will produce 1% of Portugal's total energy needs.

Lousã Phase II Wind Turbines

Construction began this week of the Phase II wind turbines on the Serra da Lousã. Its said that each turbine is capable of generating enough electricity to supply 1,000 homes. Portugal expects to generate 31 per cent of all its energy from clean sources by 2020

Sun, water, waves and wind. Not a holiday on the Algarve, but Portugal's power sources for the future.

5km off the Atlantic coastline of northern Portugal the Aguçadoura wave farm when installed will be the worlds first multi-unit wave farm. The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a semi-submerged cylindrical structure, the waves drive hydrolic motors which in turn generate electricity.

On the edge of the sleepy town of Moura in southern Portugal glittering panels are being mounted on frames the size of tennis courts, then planted in lines facing the sun. There will be 2,525 of the frames and hundreds are already in place. When complete it will be the largest photovotaic solar array in the world.

In the rugged north, the biggest wind turbine farm in Europe is under construction on the mountains of Alto Minho. Wind will provide as much as 12% of Portugals electricity needs.

Boom Festival - Castelo Branco

11th to 18th August 2008

Independent Culture And Artistic Expression. Boom 2008 will take place on the shores of Idanha-a-Nova lake. The full programme will be five days (August 12th to 17th). The gates open on 11th and the festival itself starts the following day. All cultural attractions, art, music concerts, DJ sets, performances, conferences and workshops will finish on August 17th at 11:59 pm. Gates close at sunset on the 18th.

New Terminal 2 at Lisbon Airport

Lisbon airport Terminal 2 opens its doors on the 1st of August. Occupying a total area of 7,700 square meters, Terminal 2 will include a check-in area with 2,100 square meters, with 22 counters, six electronic check-in kiosks (CUSS), a position to weigh luggage, another to process non-standard luggage, six Security Control posts, Airline Company ticket counters, Restaurant area, lavatories, and technical assistance facilities.

The chance to appreciate around 30 units of motors restored by Arlindo Oak, Nelson Caetano and Vítor Snows, three castanheirenses that dedicated a great part of their time to the the recovery and restoration of the old two wheeled machines that in days gone by had been one of the main modes of transport of Castanheira de Pera. Praia das Rocas open air swimming pool opens its doors for the 2008 summer season on Saturday 31st May.

New Airport in Alcochete

The new Lisbon airport will be built on the south side of the Targus river in Alcochete after plans to build at Ota were scrapped. Reports say that the new airport could cost 6 billion euros and will be completed in 2017. A high speed rail link connecting the airport to Lisbon and a new road and rail bridge are also planned.

1st Forest Fire - Castanheira de Pera

The first forest fire of 2008 struck in Lugar de Pisões in Castanheira de Pera today. It took 12 fire engines and 46 Bombeiros around 16 hours to extinguish it. Fire crews from Pedrógão Grande, Figueiró dos Vinhos and Ansião assisted.
