Pomar Velho (The Old Orchard) is a 200 year old farmhouse converted and completely restored offering high quality bed and breakfast guest accommodation.
Our guest rooms sleep 2 or 3 people and are all ensuite.

There is a large dining-room containing an old stone traditional bread oven which is used as an open fire and an ancient stone wine press, where we serve breakfast and can also organise lunches or dinners if required.

There is a large guest lounge with a cosy log burning stove (the house is also centrally heated), games and jigsaws, card table, DVDís, satellite TV and lots of books.
The house has many interesting features with stone lintels, original beams and locally-crafted chestnut doors and window frames Ė all double glazed.

The thick stone walls keep the winter chills and the summer heat out.

Outside Areas

Outside there are large terraces back and front and a 10 metre swimming pool with accompanying patio; all of these areas are flood-lit.
From the sun-bathed swimming pool terrace you have a stunning view of the S„o Mamede mountain range, whilst the shaded front terrace, dotted with fragrant orange and lemon trees, offers a cooler area for al fresco dining or relaxed reading.
Guests may also wish to stroll around the 5 acre grounds or walk 300 metres to the Portuguese village of Galegos or 700 metres to the Spanish village of Fonteneira.

Pomar Velho is in the heart of the Natural Park of S„o Mamede and therefore is a protected area. The landscape consists of pine trees, cork oaks, olive trees, mimosas and dry stone walls. The local village, Galegos, is the starting point of one of several way-marked, official walks organised by the park tourism authority.
Bird Watching

Being in the Natural Park, the area has a wealth of wildlife. Regular birds include the Griffon Vulture, Buzzard, Stonechat, Hoopoe, Azure-winged Magpie and the Red-Tailed Partridge. Each spring, Storks, African Bee Eaters and Herons visit to nest. Animal lovers will treasure the opportunity to possibly see the Egyptian mongoose and wild boar.
Historical Sight-Seeing

Marv„o - This fortress walled village is one of the most complete on the Iberian Peninsula. Built to repel Spanish invasion, this frontier castle was never conquered militarily. Its narrow, cobbled streets take you back to the Middle Ages whilst the amazing panoramic views stretch for over 150 kilometres.

Castelo de Vide - This was considered to be the most beautiful village in Portugal by a leading French tour guide. It possesses the oldest synagogue in Portugal, dating back to the time of the Inquisition, when many Jews from Lisbon fled to the mountainous border regions to escape death by burning.

Valencia de Alcantara - Situated on the Spanish side of the border, this bustling village has a Monday market and is the centre of many Spanish ďfiestasĒ.

Local Activities

Fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, bird watching, swimming, tennis, walking, walking with donkeys, dirt-bike riding and balloon rides.
